When No Burn Days happen
No Burn Days are declared when air quality is forecast to be poor — mostly in the cooler months, roughly October through February, when cold, still nights trap smoke and fine particles close to the ground across the Valley. They aren't set in advance; the county announces them day by day.
How to check today
Maricopa County's Clean Air mobile app shows the day's status, or you can call 602-506-6400. It's worth checking before a holiday fire — New Year's Eve and Christmas are common No Burn Days.
What's allowed and what isn't
- Allowed: gas fireplaces, gas logs, gas fire pits, gas and electric heaters
- Not allowed on a No Burn Day: wood in a fireplace, wood stove or chiminea
- May 1 to September 30: recreational and warming wood fires and outdoor wood pits are restricted across the metro area
- Fines: $50 to $250 at a home, depending on how many violations
Thinking about switching to gas?
A lot of Scottsdale owners convert because a wood fireplace can't be used on the nights people most want a fire. Converting to vented gas logs with a gas line usually runs $2,500 to $4,500; a sealed gas insert, which heats far better, runs $4,500 to $9,500. The conversion inspection is free.
