Do gas fireplaces need to be cleaned and serviced?
Yes — once a year, ideally in the fall before you first use it. Gas burns far cleaner than wood, so there's no creosote to sweep, but dust, lint and spider webs still collect in the burner and pilot, the glass gets a film, and seals and parts wear. A yearly gas fireplace service in Scottsdale usually runs $150 to $350.

Why Arizona fireplaces still get dirty
Valley homes sit unused for most of the year, and dust from monsoon storms gets into everything, including the burner ports and the pilot. Spiders like the quiet, warm pilot tube. By November, a lot of fireplaces light with a lazy yellow flame, smell dusty, or won't light at all — all things a yearly service catches first.
What a yearly service includes
- Pilot assembly and burner cleaned, ports cleared
- Thermocouple or thermopile tested
- Logs or media checked and set back in the right position
- Glass cleaned and its gasket checked
- Vent and cap checked for nests and blockages
- Gas connections leak-tested and a carbon monoxide check during a test burn
Vented gas logs in an open fireplace
If you have gas logs in a masonry fireplace, the chimney is still the exhaust path. The damper must be open when they burn (most are clamped open for that reason), and the flue should be checked for nests and debris. Logs that have been moved out of position make soot — that's the black staining on the brick.
Wood-burning fireplaces and fire pits
If you burn wood, sweeping is a different job. Our chimney sweep is $150 to $350 with a safety check and before-and-after photos.

Can I clean my gas fireplace myself?
You can wipe the glass with a cleaner made for fireplace glass once the unit is cold, and vacuum loose dust. Leave the burner, pilot and gas parts to a technician.
Is the winter safety inspection free?
Yes. We check the cap, chase cover, crown, flue, gas valve, pilot and glass seal at no charge and photograph anything that needs attention.
