Direct vent vs vent-free gas fireplace: which should I get?
For most Scottsdale homes, direct vent. A direct-vent fireplace is sealed behind glass, takes its air from outside and sends all exhaust outside, so nothing from the fire goes into the room. A vent-free unit sends its exhaust — including water vapour — into the house. Vent-free is cheaper to install but we don't recommend it for living spaces.

How each type works
- Direct vent: a sealed glass front and a two-layer pipe through the wall or roof — outside air in, exhaust out
- Vented gas logs: an open fireplace with logs; exhaust goes up the chimney, so the damper must stay open while it burns
- Vent-free: no flue at all; it burns in the room and relies on an oxygen sensor for safety
Why we recommend direct vent
Direct vent gives real heat with no combustion products in the house. Vent-free units add moisture and combustion by-products to the room, which is why some cities and homeowners' associations restrict them and why many come with limits on room size and run time. Check the rules for your city and HOA before buying any unit.
What about looks?
Vented gas logs in an open fireplace look the most like a wood fire, but most of the heat goes up the chimney. Linear direct-vent units — the long, low flame common in newer Scottsdale homes — give the modern look with good heat.
What it costs
A direct-vent insert installed in an existing fireplace runs $3,500 to $6,500; with a new liner and gas line $5,500 to $8,000. A vented gas log set runs $600 to $1,800 installed. The measure-and-quote visit is free.

Can a direct-vent insert go in my existing fireplace?
Usually, yes — it vents through liners run up the existing chimney. We check yours during the free visit.
Do I need a chimney for a gas fireplace?
Not for direct vent. It can vent straight through an outside wall, which is how many new fireplaces are added to homes without one.
