Gas log fireplace in a black surround

Why does my gas fireplace smell?

A dusty, burning smell the first few times you light it each season is normal — dust that settled on the burner over the summer is burning off. A rotten-egg or sulfur smell is gas: don't touch switches, get everyone out, and from outside call 911 and Southwest Gas at 877-860-6020.

If you smell gas — do this first

  • Leave the house and leave the door open
  • Don't flip light switches, use the thermostat, light anything or start a car in the garage
  • From a safe place, call 911 and Southwest Gas at 877-860-6020
  • Book a repair only after the gas company has made it safe

Normal: the first-fire smell

After months off, dust, pet hair and the odd insect on the burner and logs burn away the first few times. It should fade within an hour or two of burning. Opening a window helps. If it's still there after a few fires, the burner probably needs cleaning.

Not normal

  • A smell like a candle being snuffed or a smoky smell: incomplete burning — logs out of position, dirty burner, or a venting problem
  • A chemical or hot-plastic smell: wiring or a part overheating; turn it off
  • A musty smell: moisture getting into the chimney or chase, often after monsoon storms
  • Soot on the glass or the wall above the fireplace
